Most bathroom remodels take 2-4 weeks from start to finish, but that timeline depends heavily on the scope of work. A cosmetic refresh (new vanity, paint, fixtures) can be done in under a week. A full gut renovation — moving plumbing, replacing the tub, tiling floor to ceiling — typically runs 3-4 weeks. Here's a realistic week-by-week breakdown for a full bathroom remodel.
Week 1: Demolition & Rough-In
Days 1-2: Demolition. The old bathroom is stripped down to the studs. Vanity, toilet, tub or shower, tile, drywall, and flooring all come out. Expect noise and dust — we contain the work area with zip walls and run air scrubbers to minimize spread.
Days 3-5: Rough-in. This is where the "guts" go in. Plumbing lines are relocated if the layout is changing. New shower valves, tub filler, and drain lines are installed. Electrical rough-in adds wiring for vanity sconces, recessed lights, exhaust fan, and heated floor thermostat. Any framing changes — like widening a doorway or building a shower bench — happen now.
Week 2: Waterproofing & Tile
Days 6-7: Waterproofing. The shower area gets a waterproof membrane system — either a liquid-applied membrane (like RedGard) or a sheet membrane (like Schluter Kerdi). This is the single most important step for preventing leaks and mold. A 24-hour flood test may be performed depending on the shower pan type.
Days 8-10: Tile installation. Tile work begins with the shower walls and floor, then moves to the bathroom floor. Large-format tiles (12x24 or larger) go faster than mosaics. Niche shelves, accent bands, and decorative borders add time. Grout is applied on the final day and needs 24 hours to cure.
Week 3: Finishes & Fixtures
Days 11-13: Millwork and surfaces. The vanity is installed. Countertop templating may have happened in Week 2 — if so, the quartz or marble top is installed now. The mirror, medicine cabinet, and any built-in shelving go in.
Days 14-15: Fixtures and trim-out. Faucets, shower heads, towel bars, toilet paper holder, and robe hooks are mounted. The toilet is set. Light fixtures and switch plates are installed. The exhaust fan is connected and tested.
Week 4: Final Details & Walkthrough
Days 16-18: Paint and glass. Walls and ceiling are painted. If you have a frameless glass shower enclosure, it's measured and installed — this typically takes 5-7 days from measurement, so it may overlap slightly into Week 4.
Day 19-20: Punch list and walkthrough. We go through the bathroom with a fine-tooth comb — touch up paint, adjust cabinet doors, check caulk lines, test every fixture. You do a final walkthrough with us and note anything that needs attention. Once you're satisfied, the bathroom is yours.
What Can Delay the Timeline?
- Permit inspections: Rough-in and final inspections are required. Delays happen if the inspector's schedule is backed up — budget 2-3 extra days.
- Custom items: Special-order vanities, imported tile, or custom glass can add 2-6 weeks of lead time before work even starts.
- Hidden damage: Opening walls sometimes reveals water damage, mold, or outdated plumbing that needs repair before proceeding. A good contractor will flag this immediately.
